all welcome / bar on ! 22nd aug 1956: new monument ! 11th aug: sorted! occupation rd bank lane barriers at occupation rd and bank lane now modified fully in line with legal specifications for pedestrians, wheelchair users and horseriders. they are much more robust than past gates. they should stop cars, make it difficult for quads and make motorbikes slow down. thanks to the council engineer and the contractors from marske. lazenby bank bottom should soon follow suit. we have also been speaking with nhs flatts lane, teesside uni (the landowner), the council engineer and barry coppinger pcc about sorting out flatts lane where they have broken through the tree barrier. 4th july: public access soon to be restored very happy to report public access will soon be fully restored to pedestrians, wheelchairs, horseriders and mountain bikers. i met with council officers and contractors at occupation rd and lazenby bank to plan the modifications to the barriers. it was decided, at the bottom of bank lane, the main gate will be locked permanantly but will have a lowered central section to allow horses to step over. this is a legal requirement as it is a designated bridleway. to the left of it, a kissing gate will be installed. this will allow pedestrians and be wide enough for wheelchairs - the latter is a legal requirement for all public footpaths. a duplicate of this will be installed across occupation rd nearby. realistically this can only slow up quads and motorbikes but will stop 4x4s/stolen cars. after occupation rd, we moved on to lazenby bank gates. it was decided to replace the old existing gates with a new set like those used at eston. this will be also locked to the public and only accessible to farmer / electricity board etc. a pedestrian gate will also be installed to the left of the main gate. the work i was informed should be completed within a month. / craig 4.7.16 flatts lane & eston hills under threat the planning dept. has received 800 objections to the to the propsed housing estate at flatts lane. so many in fact its taking weeks to upload them all the council website. at the time of writing there are many still to go up. you can check them out here thanks to everyone who submitted one, signed the petition & gave out leaflets. no date has yet been announced when the planning application will go before committee. it is expected to be late july / august. 16.6.16: 5,000 leaflets going out to every house in normanby and surrounds.from today. thanks to all our distributors pounding the pavements and all those who cash donations made this possible. get those objections in before june 24th people ! pedestrian access to be restored we have been informed by rcbc engineering dept. that following our concerns that the new barriers are blocking pedestrian access (see article below), modifications are now set to be made before the end of this month: as follows 1) lazenby bank - the padlocking mechanism on the gates is going to be reinforced. a steel kissing gate is going to be put in to the left of the gates restoring pedestrian access. 2) occupation rd - bank lane barrier to be locked with kissing gate being installed beside it. kissing gate also to be installed in barrier across occupation rd leading to the old reservoir track. 3) flatts lane - council contacting teesside university (landowners who lease the buildings to nhs) to review ways to stop vehicles cutting thru wood possibly with steel fencing. also ... head of neighborhood services has confirmed that a work crew will be removing the flytipping in lazenby bank woods. this is all very welcome news & many thanks to the dept. for responding to the issues highlighted below :-) april 2016: new barrier problems new barriers have been installed at occupation rd eston and lazenby bank layby after 18 months of us lobbying the police and rcbc. unfortunately, and unbelievably, they also block access to pedestrians as well as vehicles! we are deeply frustrated and have written to both authorities with suggestions how this ridiculous situation can be addressed. we want to stop vehicles so people can enjoy the hills - stopping people defeats the point ! occupation road - has no public access - needs a steel stile or kissing gate built into it . bank lane (off occupation rd) - this is a designated public footpath and it is illegal to block it to pedestrians - hence the council has now locked it open can you believe. so as it stands completely pointless and open to vehicles. lazenby bank entrance road - old gates repaired and locked but public access left of the gate has been blocked with a new fence panel. panel needs to be removed and a steel stile / kissing gate installed. with the gates now locked, motorbikes are accessing through this footpath. the gap to the left of the horse- stepover needs blocking. at flatts lane college field cut - the planters have failed for the second time. quads go around them and cars cut thru the trees about 30 yds along . this needs a 10ft steel palisade fencing all along the college field edge down to the parkway and up around the back of the college. if this doesn't happen the hills be forever blighted with scenes like this. all of these stolen cars have been trashed and abandoned in the last few months. this is very frustrating given that we got the council to remove about 7 or 8 last year. feb 2016: paint attack on nab if anyone knows the moron/s responsible - please email us or call the police on 101. march 2016: barriers to block vehicles coming soon! joyriders have trashed all the main footpaths across the hills to wilton but there is good news - in the coming weeks, access will be blocked to 4x4s and quadbikes at eston and lazenby as it already is at flatts lane. this is the result of the council, the police & ourselves working together. thanks to all council & police officials involved! march 2016: flytipping latest: disgusting to find this lot in the woods at lazenby bank. amongst it, we found an envelope addressed to a ms. k ward of broxa close, redcar (above left). we passed it onto the council to investigate and have been notified that said person moved out around the time this stuff was dumped - and is no longer registered as paying council tax at any address in redcar & cleveland so possibly has left the area. the council can not access information of another borough so we will never know if it was this person or not. our 2016 calendar on sale now 24.10.15: eston beacon tribute! the blast furnace may have been blown out but the lights have not gone out across this community & here's the proof: full report here 12th october 2015: the end of teesside iron & steel? teesside's last blast furnace, at redcar, is to close. iron and steel-making on teesside will cease with the loss of 2,200 direct jobs and upwards of 8,000 including contractors and supply chain. this final act comes exactly 175 years after bolckow & vaughan were building their first plant in middlesbrough and 165 years since the ironstone discovery on eston hills which established the area as world iron-making capital... teesside iron & steel timeline october 2015: report from rural crime forum the quarterly meeting of the rural community with cleveland police was held at loftus town hall but it was dominated again by problem hot spot...eston hills. the installation of barriers to stop vehicles and quad bikes accessing the hills was promised at our agm back in january. progress has been not as quick as we had hoped but it has been made and in the coming months should be completed. see below for pictures of the work that has been carried out to date. our precious and much-loved eston hills landcape is under threat from plans to build 3 wind turbines between yearby and flatts lane. as a conservation group, we are not opposed to turbines and support renewable energy, but we believe the chosen locations are unacceptable. the green thing to do is to recycle brownfield industrial wasteland that we have in abundance and in doing so conserve our precious green landscape for the benefit of the environment and everyone. we also fear that if these turbines are built, many more could well follow. if you agree, please object to the council ! thanks to normanby primary for the donation. july 11th: litter nabbed! thanks to all who came and did their bit ! the hills are looking fantastic from trustee and new bank up to the nab... june 19th: foeh statement on latest flag we have made the foeh position clear in our statement in april (see below) but following a glut of ill-informed postings and unwarranted criticism directed at us, it is clear that some people have got the wrong end of the stick in a big way. the flag has nothing to do with us. it is not on our land. we are not the planning dept. it is the business of those who put it up and the council. but as people keep asking us why has it come down, we will explain again... eston nab (that means the summit and cliff of the hills not the sandstone monument) is a "scheduled ancient monument". this means it is classified as a conservation site of national importance as it is a bronze age and iron age site dating back 4000 years. this means it cannot be altered. and that applies to anything including a miners monument which is something many would like to see. that aside, even if the site didn't have conservation status, the erection of anything would need to go thru the statutory planning process. that's the law. end of. 25th may 2015: pot-bellied pig rescued ! in the last week, this little piggy was seen wandering on the hills near flatts lane. presumably it was an unwanted pet that had been dumped by an unscrupulous owner who should have re-homed it. fortunately it wasn't attacked by dogs and nor did it wander onto flatts lane or the parkway and cause an accident. it was caught today by foeh member, ian marshall of normanby, who lured it with dog biscuits before getting a rope on it. he took it back to his house where, after digging up his lawn, it was collected by the rspca who have arranged a new home for it. top marks ian - you are the eston hills friend of the month ! april 2015: a spring sunset captured by top photographer ian forsyth of saltburn spring clean 2015 thanks to all who came and gave trustee a deep clean. if there was one consolation of the recent fires, it was the revealing of much litter including ironically a fire extinguisher ! april 2015: foeh statement on the flag at the nab the flagpole at eston nab has been taken down by rcbc earlier this week and the debate about the flag has flared up again. this flagpole strongly divides opinion for and against. despite the flagpole not being on foeh land, we do not endorse the erection of the flagpole or anything on eston nab for 4 reasons: 1) it is illegal as a permanent fixture. it has no planning permission granted by the rcbc planning authority in accordance with british planning law. 2) it is illegal because eston nab is a scheduled ancient monument (the nab is no 1011273) it is protected by law as a site of national importance and cannot be built on / changed in anyway. 3) it is unconstitutional for us to support it as it contravenes our constitution as a law-abiding group dedicated to the conservation of the hills and heritage. endorsing this would in effect mean we would have no grounds to object to anyone erecting anything on the hills no matter how virtuous their intentions or not. and as we are also a non-party political organisation we do not support any party political placards on the flagpole or anywhere at eston nab. 4) the flagpole made of scaffold tube sections is a danger to the public should it break in high winds. to those who support the flagpole: your rights are not being taken away. the democratic rights of everyone are enshrined in the legal planning process. it means anyone has a right to submit a planning application to erect anything on their own land and, with enough public support, on public land. and everyone has a right to object or not. no one has a right to disregard the democratic rights of others in order to impose their will on a space, public or anywhere. lastly, the planning laws do not affect your right to wave a flag and you can wave any flag, anywhere at anytime should you wish so long as it doe not contravene the trespass laws and obstruct public access. thank you, the foeh trustees 21st march: happy nab day ! 21st march 2014 - the day the deal was done! a year ago, after 3 months of legalities and ironing out boundary details, 2.7 acres of land at the eastern end of eston nab became publicly owned. as the western end was already publicly owned, this meant that eston nab in its entirety was in public-ownership for the first time in history. thanks to everyone who contributed to the £15,000 that made it possible!
